 The Feast of the Gods
by Bellini, Dosso, and Titian (1514)

COMPARED TO the excesses of Titian’s bacchanals, Bellini’s bacchanal seems somewhat sedate. The gods, dressed as peasants and identifiable only through their attributes, conduct their amorous advances with restraint. Their neat pairing suggests no hint of a communal orgy.

This first bacchanal (for the gods) follows the description given in a poem by Ovid.
