Letter from Theo van Gogh to Vincent van Gogh (29 July 1889) ... is looking well, only she is a
little weak. As for me, I look like a corpse, but I went to see
Rivet, who gave me all sorts of drugs, which at least do me
enough good to put a stop to my cough, which was killing me. I
think it is over now. It is the change of life, and in
consequence of the way I am being taken care of now I am going
to regain my strength, as soon as the evil is past. Yesterday
we went to St. Germain. Oh, how beautiful the countryside is.
Why do people go and wear themselves out in cities when they
might breathe wholesome air, which brings life back?
Do you leave the establishment once in a while now? Write me
a letter if you can - just tell me how you are. Don't work too
much.

Letter from Theo van Gogh to Vincent van Gogh (5 September 1889) ... by Seurat, but it is more harmonious. We are in
good health, I hardly cough any more, and am feeling stronger.
Jo too is quite well; one begins to see that she is pregnant,
but it does not hinder her yet. One of the sisters is staying
with us at the moment. Mother has had a letter from Cor; he is
far away already, and was in good health.
Do write me a few words if you feel like it, and once again
many thanks for your letter.

canvases I promised you. What I think very unfortunate is what
you write about my having said that Theo is still coughing -
damn it - this does not please me at all - nevertheless I think
that it will improve as soon as he is a father. 3 I
wish he had my health, by which I mean that I myself always
have plenty of fresh air,
Letter from Vincent van Gogh to his mother (25 May 1890) ... dadelijk weer aan den gang gegaan.
Theo wachtte me aan de spoor op en mijn eerste indruk
was hij bleeker zag dan toen ik vertrok, maar al pratende en toen
ik hem t’ huis aan den gang zag viel het mij mede - ofschoon hij
hoestte - toch is het werkelijk waar hij er in dien tijd niet op
achteruit ging. Al bleef ’t dus ’t zelfde zou ik haast durven gelooven
dat dit reeds wat gewonnen mag worden gerekend. En het volgend
jaar hij eer sterker dan zwakker zal worden.
Het is een geduld werk zijn gestel en het leven in zijn
omstandigheden.
Enkele bijzonderheden hoorde ik van hem betreffende Cor. Als ik
schrijft groet hem regt hartelijk voor me en vertel hem eens ik weer
terug ben. Ik zou hem wel schrijven maar het is een zoo heel ander
vak het zijne en het mijne.
Theos’ vacantie nadert en dus zult U hen betrekkelijk spoedig
terug zien.Zij hebben plan ook een paar dagen naar hier te komen,
want wij hebben elkaar maar weinig en kort en gehaast gezien.
